While visiting family friends in Brazil with her mother and younger brother, armed intruders broke into the home in the middle of the night. Maria watched in horror as they murdered her mother and brother right before her eyes before turning their violence toward her.

They brutally assaulted Maria, broke her jaw, stabbed her, and left her for dead.

Despite the unimaginable trauma she had endured, Maria demonstrated extraordinary courage. She bravely recounted the events of that night and identify the evil men responsible for these horrific crimes.

Her case quickly made headlines across the region, and because of the attention it received, authorities recognized that Maria would need far more than medical care. She needed immediate safety. She needed time to heal. She needed a loving family. She needed hope and a future.
